It is a part of the diet of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yoruba_people\">Yoruba people<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Synsepalum_dulcificum#cite_note-YorubaFruits-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Others have used the fruit since at least the 18th century, when a European explorer, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_des_Marchais\">Chevalier des Marchais<\/a>, provided an account of its use. Des Marchais, who was searching&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/West_Africa\">West Africa<\/a>&nbsp;for many different fruits in a 1725 excursion, noticed that local people picked the berry from shrubs and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mastication\">chewed<\/a>&nbsp;it before meals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the 1980s in the United States, an attempt was made to commercialize the fruit for its ability to mask non-sweet foods as sweet without a caloric cost, but the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Food_and_Drug_Administration\">Food and Drug Administration<\/a>&nbsp;classified the berry as a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Food_additive\">food additive<\/a>&nbsp;and required evidence of safety.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Synsepalum_dulcificum#cite_note-Levin-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Synsepalum_dulcificum#cite_note-fptale-13\">[13]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Synsepalum_dulcificum#cite_note-14\">[14]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;For a time in the 1970s, US&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dieting\">dieters<\/a>&nbsp;could purchase a pill form of miraculin.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Synsepalum_dulcificum#cite_note-wiredlettuce-15\">[15]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;This interest had a revival in food-tasting events at which tasters consume sour and bitter foods, such as lemons,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Radish\">radishes<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pickled_cucumber\">pickles<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hot_sauce\">hot sauce<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beer\">beer<\/a>, then experience the perceived change to sweetness with miraculin.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Synsepalum_dulcificum#cite_note-nyt-16\">[16]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In tropical West Africa, where this species originates, the fruit&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Juice_vesicles\">pulp<\/a>&nbsp;is used to sweeten&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palm_wine\">palm wine<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Synsepalum_dulcificum#cite_note-21\">[21]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Historically, it was also used to improve the flavor of soured&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cornbread\">cornbread<\/a>,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Synsepalum_dulcificum#cite_note-USDA-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;but has been used as a sweetener and flavoring agent for diverse beverages and foods, such as beer,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cocktail\">cocktails<\/a>, vinegar, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pickling\">pickles<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Synsepalum_dulcificum#cite_note-22\">[22]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2011, the United States FDA has imposed a ban on importing&nbsp;<em>Synsepalum dulcificum<\/em>&nbsp;(specifying &#8216;miraculin&#8217;) from its origin in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taiwan\">Taiwan<\/a>, declaring it as an &#8220;illegal undeclared sweetener&#8221;.
